Four Recitals to Remember !

St Mary’s was the venue for four recitals on Thursday 17th April, given by students at Boston Spa School, and presented as part of their assessed work towards their A Level music Course. Each student had prepared a diverse programme featuring their various performing skills, and constructed a section of the programme for the audience, describing the music, its’ technical complexity and why they had chose to play it.

There was a very receptive audience eagerly awaiting the performances which were received with enormous acclaim and genuine applause.

The four recitalists were (L-R)

Tony Evans (Acoustic and Electric Guitar)

Tom Wingfield (trombone & Vocal)

Andy Barber, (Trumpet & Vocal)

Luke Matwiejczyk (Trumpet).

Piano accompaniments were provided by Ann Dyer (extreme right)  – who demonstrated her huge skill in this genre, accompanying an extreme range of styles and rhythms with consummate skill.

Andy was first to play, and he played and sang music of the 20th Century, ranging from a very moving and beautifully played “Pastorale” for Trumpet by Goff Richards, written in 1982 to a vocal item, a Marc Almond cover! Tom was second, presenting his programme subtitled “Tom’s Variety Bucket”. He began with a 19th Century trombone concertino, and then went on to delight the audience with his singing 2 items from Les Miserables and an Otis Redding number for which he accompanied himself at the keyboard.

After a break for Tea, Luke Matwiejczyk presented “Around the World in Twenty Minutes” – literally music of various periods form many countries of the world, ending with a foot-tapping version of Tico Tico which delighted everyone. A truly memorable day for Mark, having passed his driving test earlier in the day!

Last up was Tony, and he stunned the audience with his skills on both electric and acoustic guitar. His improvisations made the instrument speak in a way the audience hadn’t heard before, and his arrangements - “Tony’s Blues Pieces” were memorable.

In fact the whole evening was all memorable, and the skills the players demonstrated were a tribute both to their own talents and to the skills and encouragement of the Staff at Boston Spa School, who had brought the recitals to Church in aid of the appeal and increased the fund by £160 in the most delightful way. The audience were delighted with the promise from Mr. Taylor of the school that they would do their best to repeat the event next year. Meanwhile a Christmas CD from the school is being recorded in a couple of months time.
