JUSTICE & PEACE GROUP
The Justice and Peace Group focuses on issues of social and ethical concern both at home and abroad. The first of these was Fairtrade and a stall of Fairtrade goods is held once a month after the Sunday morning service in several churches. As well as raising awareness and supporting Fairtrade producers, a small profit goes towards parish funds.
On a wider community basis, the Lower Wharfe Group of Parishes is in the process of setting up a parish link with a parish outside Capetown in South Africa. This is part of a scheme organised jointly by the Diocese of York and Capetown. It gives an exciting opportunity for a range of community connections with organisations such as schools and youth groups. Our hope is that this will lead to an exchange of ideas and a sharing of resources, both spiritual and material, as well as to partnerships with Sunday Schools, youth groups and schools which would broaden our outlook both socially and spiritually. This scheme is still in its early stages, though parish profiles have been exchanged and communications are well under way.
As yet the Justice and Peace Group is small and meets on an intermittent basis, though as the connection with South Africa develops more people will be drawn into it and become involved.
