July 2009 update

MESSAGE FROM Roland Gooch : St Mary’s Organ Restoration

Well the big day is nearly upon us, and after two years of fundraising, the excitement is building and the restoration of the organ is finally getting underway.

This is what will be happening:

On Tuesday 25th August, and over the next four days the Organ will be completely dismantled and taken away for restoring, whilst at the same time a small temporary Pipe Organ will be erected in the North Aisle.

The actual building work will commence the following week Tuesday 1st September immediately after the August Bank Holiday. For the following eleven weeks there will be no access from the Church to the Choir Room, Toilet and Vestry kitchen area during the week. Access at the weekend will be provided using the Sacristy (Vicar’s vestry) door directly into the Church. The builders have agreed to leave this area clear and provide safety rails as necessary. This will ensure we don’t loose any Junior Choir members into the basement.

The work area will be screened off in the Church with plywood screens, and further protection of the altar rails will be provided.

We do ask for a little patience, as this amount of work is sure to cause some disruption. The finished result will I am sure will be something we will all be proud of, and future generations will be grateful for.

We will endeavour to keep you regularly informed through the Parish Magazine, Newsletter and on the Website, but if any one has any queries please don’t be afraid to ask.

A plea for Help!

Assistance may be needed at short notice during the Re-building and Construction work for a Friday clean up (if needed) after the Workmen have finished for the Weekend or for a quick tidy in the event of a Funeral.

We’d like to have a list of names of Volunteers who could be telephoned at short notice to help give a quick clean-up. We don’t want to get a reputation for having a grubby Church – or for Funeral visitors to have to mind where they sit etc. If you are willing to be called in this way, please let John or Liz know.

It’s not fair to leave it all the to Vergers team, so thanks in anticipation.
