November 2009

At a quick glance, the casual observer may think not much has changed since the October Report – but it surely has!

The staircase was installed on Friday 13th November (just to prove we’re not superstitious) and at the same time the platforms were in place for the thorough clean of the transept roof. Taking advantage of all of this, I was able to take a couple of pictures and the one on the right is a “birds-eye” view of the Altar from the apex of the Transept arch.

There were a couple of extra “rooms” for a while, and it felt really safe cosy and warm, high above the gallery: the platforms enabled the workers to clean down the windows, roof and walls in complete safety. These pictures were taken before the cleaning was completed: It felt very odd looking down on “Faith” and also looking “Hope” full in the face.

On Monday 16th November the lights and other electrical items began to go in, so it’s now possible to believe that Houseman and Falshaw will finish the first phase by Friday 20th November. They will return to complete the details once the Organ is safely re-erected in its new home. There will still be a feeling of “work in progress” until this is all completed in February.

Once this phase is over, the regular Friday Dustbusters will be able to take a break, though I think there will have to be a mammoth clean up before Christmas, and I did hear Fr. Peter formulating plans for a mighty combined effort.

Church cleaning can be fun as my last picture shows – the valiant senior members of the Friday team who carried the load on Friday 13th!

Thanks to all who have – and who will – respond to the Cleaning call!
